Do you prefer 'cool', 'cute', 'quirky' or 'tough' monster designs?
I love 'cute' monsters and really like monsters with 'cool' designs too.
Certain monster combat games can be rich in monsters of a paticular style, such as Yo-Kai Watch having lots of quirkier monster designs, Moco Moco Friends and Sanrio Timenet having many cute monsters, Monster Guardians having many 'tough' monsters. Series like Pokémon are a good mixture of styles.

For me its the mixture of quirky and cool tbh. I like designs that are cool but not inthe standard cool way (like say Salamence or Lucario) are but rather in a strange way. A lot of my favorite pokemon are cool but in a weird way
I like quirky designs because theyre often more creative and original than your standard cool or cute mons. Even if some people think pokemon like Klefki isunusual or dumb I personally prefer the weirder designs due to the creativity and sheer bizarre weird charm
Also kinda off topic but I think the reason for Pokemon's succsess is the variety. Mon games tend to focus on specific style on the monsters (that often being cool or tough) but Pokemon has basically anything for everyone.
Also another thing I like is when you have monsters that are differently stylished than most of the mons of the franchise. For instance while Yo-Kai watch primaly focuses on weird mons there are a few cooler mons thrown into the mix such as Kyuubi,Snee or Venoct. The contrast makes these yolks (and theother more cool/cute ones) stand out while still fitting in style

I agree that Pokémon such as Salamence, Heracross, Lucario give the impression of a specific kind of 'cool' and that Pokémon like Eelektross, Xatu, Hawlucha are a different 'cool'. It is an aesthetic that I wasn't so confident about putting into words, but you put it well; those Pokémon may be like a mixture of quirky and cool. I feel that the designs of monsters in the latter type of 'cool' can have highly creative designs. I think that Emolga fits in with the latter type of cool while also being cute. Yeah. I agree with that. ^^ When Pokémon Black and White were new I didn't like how some people criticized the designs of Pokémon like Vanillish and Trubbish. I thought they were original designs for Pokémon and I feel it was a good thing that Game Freak expanded on the inspirations to incorporate popular every day culture. I love Klefki as well. Yes, I think that if Pokémon had less variety in the styles of its design then it may not have been as popular as well. The original Pokémon games catered for both cool and cute styles with Pokémon like Nidoking and Charizard as well as Jigglypuff and Clefairy. Great point. I feel that Jibanyan, Komasan are examples of cute monsters in Yo-Kai Watch that stand out as well. Great post.
