Sanrio Timenet: Kako Hen and Mirai Hen (サンリオタイムネット 過去編未来編, which is literally Sanrio Timenet: Past and Future editions) are monster battling games produced by Imagineer in 1998 which feature many Sanrio characters as NPCs who play their own role in the story.
The games have an interesting plot, with cool and cute original monster designs. I think these games are fun to play. However, the games have lots of random encounters (not just in a specific space such as tall grass) and you cannot always run away even if your monster is faster. Fortunately there is an item equivalent to Pokémon's "repel" in this game called Tekiyorāzu (テキヨラーズ) that can be bought in shops.
The games have some music I really like too.
I was not sure how to beat the game partly because my knowledge of Japanese is limited, so I decided to copy the route of a tool-assisted speedrun and beat it.
The games have two very difficult final bosses at level 99 who can heal. For comparison, the sole monster I raised was only level 52, so beating them requires a strategy or possibly grinding.
In this game you can capture monsters, but a nice feature is that you can also register data for 64 Sanrio characters.
The past version is initially set in the past, and the future version is initially set in the future. You can choose to travel through time, but I've heard that after beating the game you do not have the option to go back. Different characters and monsters appear in different versions.
A completed save file for this game can be found here.

The story:
Time was flowing properly in the world of Timenet, the home of the Old Man of Time, thanks to the Pillar of Time which is responsible for the flow of the past, the present and the future. However, due to the work of someone, the Pillar of Time was broken into small pieces and the world was divided into the past and the future.
The protagonist receives an email from the Old Man of Time, who explains the situation and requests that he or she helps save the world of Timenet by collecting the Time Fragments, before the flow of time is permanently lost.
This game features a hero and rival and at the beginning of the game the player can either choose a male or female hero as the protagonist. The other character will act as the rival.
The rival will race the player to change the world of Timenet back to its original state, and will act as the player's rival at various points in the game. Soon after, the Old Man of Time takes the player to the world of the past (Kako Hen) or future (Mirai Hen). For some reason, the protagonist can hear a girl exclaim "help me" while travelling...
Here is more information about the game.
