Monster Tactics is a Game Boy Color game that was released in 2000. It was published by Nintendo and developed by Spiral. Spiral was a company who became part of the Marigul Management group; where smaller developers were promoted to work for Nintendo under contract. The company Noise who made the Custom Robo series were part of Marigul Management as well.
In Monster Tactics, you play as Kabin (who is joined by Kaen, Tāren) in the Iraldi Kingdom. You have to clear rooms, fighting monsters in Iraldi Kingdom in strategy style gameplay. Rooms are covered in darkness, and you can only see a small area of the room at a time using your flashlight. You have a limited amount of time to move around, and can use the limited time to attack monsters and hide before they attack you.
After monsters are defeated, you scan them and can acquire their skills for Kabin, Kaen and Tāren to use in battle.
I personally like this game and think it has a cool soundtrack.

You told me about this. Seems interesting It's one of the fun more 'pick up and play games' I've played (my interpreation being a game that is user friendly and fun to play at anytime), but that said there was a part in the game where you merge skills or something like that, and I lost track of where I was. In the future I may replay it and aim to complete it.
